When the idea of a blog about jewelry making came up, memories of my childhood flew through my head. My mom has always been very creative and from a very young age she taught me how to make things. I made picture frames from plates, Barbie doll clothes from scrap fabric, vases from glass bottles, key chains from nuts and bolts… just to name a few. Out of all the made-from-scratch endeavors, jewelry was the thing I enjoyed the most. When I made the jewelry I could display my masterpiece and when someone said ‘Oh, I really like your necklace. Where did you get it?’, I could proudly exclaim ‘I made it!’ Of course when you tell someone you created a piece, then they inevitably ask you to make them one as well and eventually you have a mini jewelry store on your hands….
For our holiday gathering at Funky Frum we went to A Strand Above, which is a delightful jewelry making shop in the quaint town of Webster Groves (in St. Louis). They had all of the beads, wire, metals, pendants and clasps you could imagine so our staff had a great time and walked away with som
e one-of-a-kind pieces of jewelry. (See our selection of our pieces below!)
Creating your own jewelry not only allows you to have beautiful pieces that you love, but helps you fill in the gaps in a wardrobe always craving more accessories. A jewelry making shop is a great place to begin, but stopping by your local craft store and picking out some beads and wire is also fun and easy. Just be careful, if you become too good, friends may ask ‘where did you get that’ and you may end up making jewelry for everyone you know.
